István Gábor Takács
Video Advocacy Program OfficerAbout myself
I became a psychologist in 2004. That year, I had the opportunity to learn the theory and practice of harm reduction in Frankfurt, Germany. In 2005, I launched the Mediamonitor program of the HCLU and it received the 2007 SocialMarie award for innovative social projects. In 2008, we started "HCLU Film" - the video advocacy program of HCLU. Between 2005 and 2009, I was a counsellor at the Drug Prevention Foundation's needle and syringe program. I am a board member of the Hungarian Association of Harm Reduction since 2007.
Why HCLU?
Because my studies formed me to help people but I soon learned that help often does not reflect the real world needs of people we are trying to assist and sometimes does more harm than good. Often it is the helper state that clients need the most protection from. At the HCLU and in the philosophy of harm reduction, the opposite direction is taken: respect for human rights, human dignity and people's choices come first and foremost. I am lucky and honoured to do a job day by day, that I think is useful and does good.
