Invitation to HCLU Press Conference
The HCLU will hold a press conference on findings of police practices during September and October 23rd, 2006
The HCLU turns to the public because,
– findings of the HCLU’s legal-aid service representatives, in related cases confirm previous suspicion of objectionable police practices;
– new information has arised in the matter of usage of constraining tools and practices, which questions the fundamental lawfulness of certain tools and practices.
In previous cases handled by the HCLU, it became clear that police reports on youths detained during the riots only contained foggy, general information instead of specific data on their activities. A number of these reports led to the pre-trial arrest of detainees, but in almost all cases proved to be too scarce to press charges.
Due to an investigation instigated by one of the HCLU’s reports to the police, the HCLU learned, that the police did not comply in the least with legal regulations on the use of rubber bullets.
This way, not only the fact that these measures resulted in serious injuries is objectionable, but the question of how and after what kind of training were the shotguns – not classified as firearms, but capable of extinguishing life – deployed.
During the press conference, representatives of the HCLU will reveal documentation to the public which proves: the police did not have authorization for the use of rubber bullets.
